Food Porn - All in good taste, of course

The weekend just past was a real bumper one for our veggie garden. Potatoes galore, plus a little bit of this ‘n’ that. As you can see from this picture of my son Matthew, we got a wide range of sizes. Incidentally, the picture was my idea, the face was his.

The beauty of these potatoes is that they were grown accidentally. We bought seed potatoes, planted them, and they did nuthin’. These were just from potatoes that got too old to eat, so we chucked them in the garden.

It was pure magic as we dug them up. Every time I turned the garden fork, a few more almost-golden nuggets would appear and Mattie got so excited.
In this pic you can see just what kind of a harvest we reaped.

So we needed to come up with some uses.

Use 1: home-made chips. Total. Yum. So good that I literally ate one from the floor. No way I was wasting it.

Use 2: Irish Farmhouse Bake.
Potatoes. Bacon. Far too much cheese. There’s also butter, cream, onion and pepper. And it turns out a little something like this.

Now, this is a blog for smut writers, is it not? How does all this domestic self-sufficiency stuff relate?

Back-story. That’s how.

Those chips were brilliant. The farmhouse bake was divine. Did those potatoes taste any different to ones we buy in the shop? I strongly doubt it. But those meals sang in our mouths because of the joy Mattie had as we dug up the potatoes, and the chatter between him and I as we washed them. The fact that those potatoes would not have existed had we not planted them added weight to it.

The back-story of those potatoes was what gave them such importance to our mouths.

In smut-writing it can be easy to focus on the actions of the moment to the detriment of the story. Sometimes it’s necessary because of a limited word count. The challenge is to make the action reveal the back-story.

This is a battle that Emma Hillman and I are facing every round of the Smut Marathon. The word counts are getting higher, but still they’re quite low. This upcoming round had a 900-word limit and “toys” as its single word prompt. As the marathon is still being voted on anonymously, I won’t reveal which of the stories is mine. But in this round, I feel I had more back-story to the characters than in any other round.

Why? Because a few years ago I had an anthology of stories published with a now-defunct publishing house. And it featured a little story I was quite fond of, with two characters I really enjoyed. And for this round of the Smut Marathon, I was able to continue their story for a period of about 900 words.

Absolutely! You might be able to have lust at first sight, but love takes longer than that. And how much more amazing is the sex in a story when you're in love with the characters?

Oh yeah. That's the part I love about writing. I think as a writer you need to love your characters, even the hateful ones.
