Erotica or Porn...

I was tootling around on Facebook just today, when I saw the status of one of my friends, Monie Penny. It regarded the question of deciding whether something - a story, a picture, a movie - is pornography or erotica.

There were a few responses. I feel close to this one, so I had to join in. My response...

Absolutely, they're different. Porn, in its modern form, is efficient. It's basal and caters for those who desire a quick fix, a non-challenging wrist workout. While porn will include difficult matter, such as BDSM and ambivalent sexuality, it's almost exclusively for the titillation of the viewer/reader. Erotica is sensual. Some of the most erotic writing and movies are the ones where it's clear what's happening, but it isn't spelled out in every minute detail, or shown in wet and wild close-up. The so-called characters of porn are nothing more than jockeys riding a bucking horse loosely called a plot. In short, porn is about "how", and erotica is about "why".

What do you all think? Do you feel that erotica and porn are effectively one and the same? Do you believe they each stand one side of the mirror, apparently the same, yet in fact greatly opposed? Or are they two entirely separate entities?

Our operators are standing by...

It's an age old debate, this one, isn't it? It's certainly been one that's had me thinking ever since I started writing.

Back in 2007 I wrote a blog post on this topic...

The basic argument I put forward was that what differentiates erotica from porn is... Characters.

In erotica, each character is different and those difference influence the plot. Whereas in porn the characters are pretty much interchangeable. To quote my post...

You could happily swap “Sally” from “My cheating Wife” with “Sophie” from “My wife’s fiftieth birthday gangbang” and you’d have essentially the same stories.

On an unrelated note, my word verification is "proni". So close...

I have to agree with Marc.

"In erotica, each character is different and those difference influence the plot. Whereas in porn the characters are pretty much interchangeable."

It all has to do with the depth and development of the characters. Sure its titillating but it is also a good story with plot.
